Are songs in movies sang while filming?

Were the songs in the old movies (High Society with Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, Holiday Inn, etc.) sang on film or were they prerecorded in a studio?

  1. Its a bummer, but yeah they are always prerecorded as to not mess up on set. Its hard enough as it is, singing, dancing, acting, nether the less all at the same time! lol
  2. Yes they do sing on set, but always recorded in a studio before hand. For practice, sound quality and elimination of back round noises. You'll never know what they used.... set, studio or both. Mama Mia was a combination of both. Peace.
  3. They were prerecorded. Interestingly enough this made the film The Blues Brothers difficult to film as blues artists never sing a song exactly the same way twice which wrecked the lipsynching.
